Morgan Maassen - Photographer

When and where did you start surfing?
I started surfing when I was 7 years old in Santa Barbara, California. My dad pushed me into my first waves on my birthday that summer, and I've been addicted ever since.

What do you love about surfing?
I love how intimately you experience nature through surfing. Nothing is more sacred than surfing alone to me.

What is it that you love about photographing surfing?
Photography came late to me at the age of 18, but once I found it I realized I could document all that I love and cherish about my passion.

Where is your favourite place in the world that your job has taken you?
Between Western Australia, Reunion Island and Hong Kong, the places photography takes me continuously blows my mind.

How did you first get into photography?
One day my dad gave me his old 35mm SLR, so I started taking it on all my little adventures, shooting my friends along the way. I eventually upgraded to digital equipment and then a water housing.

Do you have a favourite shot that you have taken or a favourite surfer to shoot?
My favorite photo would have to be of the children playing in the water hole in the Brazilian sand dunes, or the mother whale and her child in Tahiti... they were both surreal moments that I will forever cherish. My favorite surfers to photograph would have to be Steph Gilmore or Sterling Spencer, for very different reasons...

What sort of education have you had?
I left high school early to take a full time graphic design job. while working, I took night classes at the local college for anthropology, art and filmmaking, but put that all on the back burner when photography and traveling became somewhat serious.

What is your current job and what does it entail?
currently, I am a photographer and filmmaker. In the surf industry, I work full time for Quiksilver, shooting their athletes, lifestyle, and fashion work. Outside of the surf world, I shoot a lot of lifestyle and commercial work, and am slowly drifting into fashion.

Are you working on any projects at the moment that you would like to plug?
I've got a couple cool projects in the works with Quiksilver and Monster Energy, but I can't discuss them yet :)

If you could photograph anybody or anything in the world who/what would it be?
Hmmm.... Lee Scratch Perry building his 'Black Ark' recording studio in Jamaica.

Do you have any advice for people wanting to make a career out of surf photography?
I'd recommend shooting photos everyday, looking for inspiration outside of the subjects you plan to shoot, and be prepared to throw all your weight into marketing and networking!
